Volunteer for Pi Day

March 11th from 7:20 – 1:00pm

2 Full Day Volunteers & 3 Lunch Time Volunteers

----------------

Pi Day is celebrated on March 14th (3/14) around the world. Pi (Greek letter “π”) is the symbol used in mathematics to represent a constant — the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter — which is approximately 3.14159. Pi Day is an annual opportunity for math enthusiasts to recite the infinite digits of Pi, talk to their friends about math, and eat pie

Since everyone will be on Spring Break during actual Pi day, the competition will occur on the Friday proceeding (3/11).  We will need 2 volunteers to handle morning Pi recitation sessions and 3 volunteers for lunch Pi recitations.  After lunch, winners will be announced.

  • Pi Recitations begin at about 7:30am in MPR 1
  • There is typically a low volume of students to begin
  • Students sign in and receive a "Pi Recitation Contest Card"
  • Students have two opportunities to recite as many digits as possible.  They may use just one.
  • When students complete their recitation(s), they give their card to a volunteer/Booster to be added to a spreadsheet
  • At about 11:30, lunches will begin and the number of students who will be reciting will increase.
  • From the beginning of the contest through 12 noon, scores will not be displayed, to build up the suspense (and the kids are quite secretive about their "scores").   At noon, scores will be projected in MPR1
  • The pie eating competition will happen at 5th-6th grade lunch.
  • We can shut it down at about 1pm, which will give me time to ask what type of gift card each student would like.
